In 1964, Janie Sykes-Kennedy founded ID: Inner Dignity in Brooklyn, New York. It was an innovative school which taught self-esteem to girls. Since then, she has worked around the world teaching cross-cultural communications, leadership development and learning through the arts in places like Accra, Ghana and Adelaide, Australia. Over 40 years later, her daughter - Dr. Terri Kennedy - continues her tradition and commitment to youth development. With her mother, she co-founded the Young PWR Brokers, which teaches positive self-esteem life skills to youth in urban areas starting with a group of formerly homeless pre-teen and teen girls in Harlem. She also offers outreach talks and workshops for young people which seek to:

• Build self-awareness
• Foster life visioning skills
• Provide healthy living information
• Develop stress management skills
• Offer career development and mentoring

The Greater Allen A.M.E. Cathedral of New York 

On June 26, 2010, Dr. Terri Kennedy led a session for The Greater Allen Cathedral of New York Young Adult Conference 2010, Harvest It Now! It is a time of refreshing, redirection and renewal for the twenty-somethings and thirty-somethings of the church. Dr. Kennedy's session was entitled "PWR Principles: Achieving Purpose With Results."

On June 6, 2010, Dr. Terri Kennedy was the keynote for the Rites of Passage graduation ceremony for The Greater Allen A.M.E. Cathedral of New York. She shared inspiration and life management tips for the young ladies who completed the program, as well as their families.

Alliance for a Healthier Generation
On Saturday, September 27th, 2008, Dr. Terri Kennedy participated in the Alliance for a Healthier Generation event in New York. She inspired the young people to live healthier lives, including sharing advice on eating and sleeping habits and showing them ways to keep in shape. The Alliance for a Healthier Generation is a partnership between the American Heart Association and the William J. Clinton Foundation. The goal of the Alliance is to stop the nationwide increase in childhood obesity by 2010 and to empower kids nationwide to make healthy lifestyle choices.

Youth and Young Adult Revival at Abyssinian Baptist Church
On Saturday, May 31st, 2008, Dr. Terri Kennedy led a workshop on "Finding Your Life Purpose" for the Youth and Young Adult Revival at Abyssinian Baptist Church in New York. The theme for the weekend event was "This is Why I'm Hot: On Fire For Christ." She was joined by guest preachers, Reverend Elizabeth Siwo and Reverend BeSean Jackson. In addition to the workshops, worship and fellowship, there was a block party.

On Saturday, March 22nd, 2008, Dr. Terri Kennedy led two stress management workshops for the 43rd SNMA Annual Medical Education Conference (AMEC) in New York. It is consistently the largest gathering of underrepresented minority medical students at any time of the year in any place in the nation.  Part of AMEC's mission is to address the needs of underserved communities and increase the number of clinically excellent, culturally competent and socially conscious physicians. This year's conference theme was "Leadership in Medicine: Science to Service."

On Wednesday, January 30th, 2008, Dr. Terri Kennedy participated in a Broadway Housing Celebration Event in New York. She led a visioning session and then discussion on the nature of success for teens and their mentors from the Dorothy Day Apartments in Harlem.

Mentoring in Medicine
On Saturday, December 8th, 2007, Dr. Terri Kennedy led a series of Power Living Stress Management workshops for the Mentoring in Medicine Conference in New York. The program finds and nurtures socioeconomically disadvantaged students in urban schools from third grade on to help them develop the tools necessary to successfully achieve their goal of becoming a health care professional. The keynote speaker for the event was the Honorable Congressman Charles Rangel.

Dr. Terri Kennedy has been involved in the Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine in New York since it opened in Harlem in 2007. She led multiple interactive workshops on the "Body-Mind-Spirit Connection" for the medical students.

On Saturday, September 23, 2006, Terri Kennedy participated in the third annual Children's Sports & Fitness Expo. Joined by some of the Ta Yoga teachers, she led a group of kids in a series of yoga sessions throughout the day.

369th Regiment Armory
On Wednesday, September 7, 2006, Terri Kennedy participated in the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the 369th Regiment Armory on 143rd Street in Harlem. Joined by some of the Ta Yoga teachers, she led a group of girls from the Thurgood Marshall Academy in a yoga session. In attendance at the event was Governor George E. Pataki, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and Congressman Charles Rangel, among other dignitaries.

2006 Inner City 100 Summit
On Tuesday and Wednesday, April 18 and 19, 2006, Terri Kennedy attended the 2006 Inner City 100 Summit in Boston. She spoke on a panel for the ICIC Growing Up CEO Program which celebrates outstanding young CEOs who run successful inner city businesses. Founded in 1994 by Harvard Business School professor Michael E. Porter, ICIC promotes economic prosperity in America's inner cities through private sector engagement that leads to jobs, income and wealth creation for local residents.

Figure Skating in Harlem
In 2005 and 2006, Terri Kennedy led workshops for Figure Skating in Harlem - which provides educational, cultural and athletic opportunities for girls in the Harlem community through the unique discipline and art of figure skating. She taught the girls ages 12 to 14-years-old yoga postures, breathing techniques and discussed the importance of taking care of themselves.

On Sunday, September 12, 2004, Terri Kennedy spoke as part of the TEEN PEOPLE Seminar in association with the Pathways to Beauty and Wellbeing Exhibition at the Jacob Javitz Convention Center in New York. It was the largest consuer event ever held to date focusing entirely on beauty, cosmetics, hair care, skin care, nutrition, health, fitness, spa and personal growth. She shared her "Power Living: Mini-Escapes" relaxation techniques, and discussed stress, food and natural beauty.

On Tuesday, Janaury 13, 2004, Terri Kennedy spoke at the Future Leaders Institute. She led a discussion on "The True Nature of Success" and offered life insights and stress management tips to the students at this Harlem-based public school. The school offers an innovative, academically rigorous curriculum, a mandatory extended school day and year, and a broad array of enrichment opportunities.
